Day-by-Day Route Breakdown

Day 1: Fort William → Laggan

37.9 km / 23.5 mi · 416m↑ · 376m↓ ·

A big opening day that covers the entire southwestern section in one push. Leave Fort William, admire Neptune's Staircase, pass through Gairlochy, and walk the full length of Loch Lochy through forest trails. Finish at Laggan Locks where the Eagle Barge Inn provides a well-earned stop.

Day 2: Laggan → Invermoriston

27.5 km / 17.1 mi · 317m↑ · 317m↓ ·

Follow Loch Oich to Fort Augustus and watch the canal boats navigate the five-lock staircase into Loch Ness. Continue along the western shore through Inchnacardoch Forest, climbing gradually through mixed woodland to the charming village of Invermoriston with its historic stone bridge and waterfall.

Day 3: Invermoriston → Drumnadrochit

23.2 km / 14.4 mi · 564m↑ · 570m↓ ·

The hilliest day. Climb high above Loch Ness through forest and open ground with spectacular views across the water. Pass through Grotaig, descend past Urquhart Castle ruins, and drop into Drumnadrochit. A shorter distance but the elevation makes it feel earned.

Day 4: Drumnadrochit → Inverness

31.4 km / 19.5 mi · 491m↑ · 512m↓ ·

The grand finale. Climb to the viewpoint at Abriachan for one last sweeping panorama over Loch Ness, then cross open moorland before descending through woodland to the Caledonian Canal. Follow the River Ness into Inverness and finish at the castle. Job done.
